Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
