Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
