The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
