19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been won on hardcourt
A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his first trophy for 882 days with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament final.
The athlete, a former world number one, has experienced a difficult season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and experiencing a difficult moment at the US Open.
The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in particular - caused him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately separating with long-term trainer his previous coach.
Now working with Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually progressed in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought three-set victory over opponent Moutet.
This represents his initial championship following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard surface since March of that year.
The win also signifies he has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"For the first time I'm at a competition with my two daughters together, so to secure a title is particularly special," commented ranked player Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my second daughter her name, because the first title I got when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six title deciders, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.
The player's defensive approach and frequent outbursts on the playing surface had led some to question if his ability to compete at the elite level was over.
Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and compete aggressively, supported by an improved service.
Medvedev fought back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, securing 4 of the last five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The pair traded break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his first ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to create a final set.
Moutet rescued four early-game opportunities in a tight third set before the Russian won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Fittingly, Medvedev secured the win with a point at the net, with the Frenchman failing to control a shot after a lengthy match.
